Chaplain (LTC) Abdul-Rasheed Muhammad, (US Army-Retired), was affirmed as the first Muslim Chaplain in the US Armed Forces, the Pentagon on December 3, 1993. Shortly after retiring in October 2012, Imam Muhammad became the Nation's first full-time Muslim Chaplain with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
He is an accomplished author and contributor to several publications, including co-author of, "Diversity in Human Interaction: The Tapestry of America." In March 2013, an article he authored was published in the Journal of Healthcare Chaplaincy. Our new Imam has also served as a member of the VA/DOD Integrated Mental Health Strategy (IMHS) leadership team for Strategic Action (SA) #23 on Chaplains' Roles in the Veteran's Administration (VA) and Department of Defense (DOD) as well as one of the Army's national strategic planners and trainers on suicide awareness and prevention programs. Imam Muhammad's final military assignment after 23 years of active duty was as Command Chaplain, US Army Public Health Command, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD.
He is a Board Certified Chaplain with the Department of Veteran Affairs where he served as the Mental Health Chaplain within the VA Maryland Healthcare System and currently serves as the Mental Health Chaplain and Imam at the San Diego VA Healthcare System.
Imam Muhammad is the former Director of Chaplaincy Services and the Endorsing Agent for Islamic Society of North America (ISNA). He's a licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of Michigan, and is a Master Addictions Counselor (MAC) with the National Certification Commision for Addiction Professionals.
Our new Imam is a Doctoral Candidate in Social Work at Capella University and is a Presidential Member of the National Society of Leadership and Success. He and his wife, Sister Saleemah, have been married for 44 years and have six adult children.
